In Europe, the ETIP SNET Working Group 4 (2025) report \u201cUpskilling needs for the energy system to support the energy transition with a focus on digital skills\u201d explicitly links the energy transition to digital competence, virtual environments, new training methods, and the enabling role of digital twins. In the United States, the DOE Grid Modernization Multi-Year Program Plan and the EPRI framework \u201cWorkforce Skills of the Future\u201d deliver a parallel message, emphasizing that simulation and digital training must become part of everyday practice to prepare the grid workforce.<\/p><p>This keynote presents High Fidelity Digital Twins (HFDT) as an industry response to these policy-driven demands: manufacturer-authored, functionally equivalent replicas of protection relays and test equipment, operating in virtual time with full algorithmic fidelity. A central theme is co-simulation, where HFDT protection devices operate together with power-system models and real-time test environments to reproduce realistic system behavior and interactions. The talk will share practical experience from commercial protection-engineering training courses delivered in Sweden, where HFDT enabled each participant to work with a complete virtual setup, increasing hands-on time and individual responsibility while reducing dependence on physical lab hardware.<\/p><p>Beyond upskilling, the keynote will outline how HFDT combined with co-simulation supports protection workflows such as closed-loop virtual testing, pre-commissioning preparation, regression testing, and collaborative troubleshooting. It will also highlight opportunities for academia, including scalable laboratory teaching, reproducible experiments, research on protection algorithms and settings, and shared benchmark scenarios without the cost and logistics of full physical labs. With a master\u2019s degree in electrotechnical engineering from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, he has over 30 years of experience in the field. Andrea has worked as an HV power system protection specialist at HV relay protection manufacturer Hitachi Energy Grid Automation Products (former ABB) in V\u00e4ster\u00e5s, Sweden for 18 years, and at Megger in Stockholm for 9 years as a product manager and technical specialist for relay test equipment and IEC 61850 test set and tools. He has also worked as a consultant in power system protection and IEC 61850 applications for 5 years. Andrea holds a patent in the area of IEC 61850 testing tools and algorithms.<br \/>Andrea is the chair of the TC 95, active member of the IEC TC 95\/MT 4 and TC 95\/WG 2 committees for standardization of protection functions and IEC 61850 application for protection. He started with Megger Sweden (formerly PROGRAMMA) in 1992 and have been in various roles such as Production Management, Quality, Commercial Marketing, Strategic Marketing, Product Management and Sales.<\/span><\/p><p>Niclas is currently a Global Industry Director (GID) in the Business Unit Protection at Megger group and is responsible for the strategic planning of Megger test equipment within relay protection, circuit breaker, instrument transformer and primary testing.\u00a0Niclas is a member in Cigr\u00e9, attending two WGs and is a frequent speaker at international He serves as the IEC TC57 liaison to ISO for both Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Industrial Data Ontology (IDO).
