Its Diocese Church, or Propsteikirche (1599), was the only historic building left\u00a0intact\u00a0after the destruction of the city centre by Allied bombing in\u00a0World War II. In the suburbs, however, the 13th-century Blankenstein Castle and an 11th-century church at Bochum-Stiepel still stand.<\/p><div class=\"one-good-fact-module\">\u00a0<\/div><p class=\"topic-paragraph\">Until the late 1950s\u00a0coal mining\u00a0was the city\u2019s economic mainstay; its importance is shown by the mining college, the geologic and mining museums, the mining research institute, and the headquarters building of the miners\u2019\u00a0trade union, insurance, and cooperative organizations. The closure of the last mine in 1973 forced a diversification of Bochum\u2019s economy. New industries have grown, particularly automobiles and electronics; metallurgy and allied industries are also important. Bochum is now a commercial and cultural centre for a densely populated part of the Ruhr. Bochum has a modern appearance with new schools, housing estates, sports facilities, and a theatre.
