The designs of these networks will be challenging as they introduce new constraints in terms of their integration to exiting terrestrial networks and the high-speeds of satellites, around 27,000 km/hr. In addition to the reliable design of these communication networks towards 6G, the security of inter-satellite links of these emerging mega-constellations will be another issue that needs to be addressed in a comprehensive manner. This talk aims to describe the emerging satellite networks and highlight the design challenges in terms of secure and reliable communications. The potential security threats in the physical layer will be described with a conceptual framework, considering the cyber-physical nature of the satellite systems. With the increase of concerns regarding environmental changes and energy security risks, the share of renewable energy sources and power electronics has been highly increased which affects both stability and security of power systems frequency. On the other hand, frequency control and protection are moving to be based on wide-area measurement infrastructures instead of local measurement which brings new challenges called the negative impacts of locally measured frequencies. This is partly due to the challenge of integrating a large number of small-scale, distributed renewable energy generators to the utility power grid; and partly due to the intermittency and cost of such resources. The current practice for installing small generators is to invest for capacity that only meets the average demand of the consumers with rigid contracts, simply because in general, there is no stake in surplus energy from prosumers. In this talk, we introduce novel AI-based tools that will allow a peer-to-peer energy trading platform consisting of microgrids to become a part of the future transactive energy systems. Energy trading among microgrid communities promises to make use of the renewable energy more efficiently and strengthen the resilience of the power grid during disasters and attacks. In this talk, we present our Bayesian learning and correlated deep q-learning based techniques that address uncertainty and improve energy trading decisions in transactive energy systems.

Biography

Prof. Melike Erol-Kantarci is Canada Research Chair in AI-enabled Next-Generation Wireless Networks and Associate Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Ottawa. consisting of interactive prosumers, are reaching a dominant interest in many countries in the last years. Prosumers, by participating in energy communities, can achieve economic benefits, by maximizing the exploitation of locally produced renewable energy and by providing ancillary services to the system operators. Considering the large scale number of prosumers in an energy community and the requirement to carry out both day-ahead and real-time optimizations, new real-time and distributed optimization methods are necessary to cope with the issue of scalability while preserving the privacy of prosumers.

In this keynote, a new extreme-scale and real-time distributed parallel optimization is proposed to manage a large scale energy community with Peer to Peer (P2P) energy exchanges. The proposed optimization is highly scalable and privacy-preserving. Simulation tests, carried out on a large energy community consisting of thousands of prosumers, demonstrated the effectiveness of the innovative optimization method both in terms of scalability of the method and privacy protection for the prosumers.

Biography

Prof. Pierluigi Siano Pierluigi Siano (M’09–SM’14) received the M.Sc. degree in electronic engineering and the Ph.D. degree in information and electrical engineering from the University of Salerno, Salerno, Italy, in 2001 and 2006, respectively.
He is a Professor and Scientific Director of the Smart Grids and Smart Cities Laboratory with the Department of Management & Innovation Systems, University of Salerno.
His research activities are centered on demand response, on energy management, on the integration of distributed energy resources in smart grids, on electricity markets and on planning and management of power systems.
In these research fields he has co-authored more than 550 articles including more than 300 international journal papers that received in Scopus more than 11000 citations with an H-index equal to 51.
In 2019 and 2020 he received the award as Highly cited Researcher by ISI Web of Science Group. The switching technology must therefore tackle the challenges brought by this change, providing means for safe, reliable, and efficient switching at all voltage and current levels.

This talk will discuss both numerical and experimental methods to develop next generation of reliable and efficient circuit breakers. Focus will be on electromagnetically actuated circuit breakers, as they are particularly well suited to meet the requirements of more frequent, synchronous, and adaptive switching. The development of those breakers requires a deep understanding of phenomena stemming from the domains of mechanics, electromagnetics, and control. Therefore, a particular topic of interest is simulation methods that allow for the analysis of all those coupled phenomena in an efficient way.

Beyond electromagnetic drives for switching technology, the talk will also give examples of novel actuators utilizing smart materials and discuss the potentials and challenges of the industrial use of such actuators.

Biography

Arda TÜYSÜZ received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Istanbul Technical University, Turkey, in 2006; his M.Sc. degree in electrical power engineering from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, in 2009; and his Ph.D. degree in electrical drives from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, Switzerland, in 2015.
